Rune Ballot é uma adolescente prostituta em Mardock City. Um dia, ela é pega por um gerente de cassino ambicioso chamado Shell, que lhe dá tudo o que ela pode querer. Renovada por uma falsa inocência, um falso passado e agora a falsa vida que Shell lhe deu, Ballot sente-se agradecido. No entanto, ela não pode deixar de estar curiosa sobre por que ele fez tanto por ela, então ela faz uma pesquisa sobre seu passado em um computador. Isso acaba sendo um erro que mudará muito sua vida. Quando Shell descobre o que ela fez, ele tenta queimá-la até a morte por explodir seu carro.
